Writing as a Business

If you are planning on making the move from writer to author, it is important to consider the business of writing.

You will need to get a sense of what your sales goals are and, with that in mind, what your budget will be.

Working within your budget, you can decide where to focus your spending. With some research you can decide what can be done for free, or fairly inexpensively, and where you should spend money on professionals or quality tools.

Do your market research and find your ideal customer. Knowing who your ideal customer is, decide on a plan to market your book.

This all makes sense but even knowing what is a reasonable sales goal is a bit of a guessing game.

In my experience, having a good editor is super important. Paying for an email subscriber, not at all. Book promotion newsletters are good for getting your book into the world.

I’ve learned a lot this past year and while I was cautious with the decisions I made, I would do some things differently.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the process of publishing and the business behind it, I would be happy to answer any that you have!
