Memoir
"A memoir is any nonfiction narrative writing based in the author's personal memories . . . A memoir often tells the story of a particular event or time, such as touchstone moments and turning points from the author's life." en.m.wikipedia.org
Have you ever considered writing a memoir? We often think of a memoir as something profound written by someone famous. However it could be written by anyone.
Everyone has had unique experiences that others might find interesting. You may have encountered something that others have also come up against, and by sharing your story, you could be helping a reader in a significant way.
A memoir could explore the insights on life and love you had on a beach vacation in a moment where you were able to think beyond your To Do list.
It most certainly does not need to be written by someone famous, and it could be a lovely way to share your life and the adventures you have had with your children or grandchildren.
Consider 3-5 stages in your life and an episode in each. The circumstance does not have to be life-altering; it could be about an activity you loved or excelled in, how it felt when you met your spouse, or what it was like being a parent. The choices are endless! Heartfelt, sincere reflections are fascinating to many. Being your authentic self is essential in any situation, but very much so when writing a memoir. Be honest with yourself and your reader. Choose one particular event or memory and write about it.
Although the following excerpt from my book Northern Escape refers to Xander's journal, the text within it was written for someone to find and read, so, in that way, it reads like a memoir. I include it here for inspiration.
[Spoiler Alert]
Jim flipped to the next picture of Xander’s journal. “I regret not being able to do more. I really thought that with a law degree I could make a difference, but experimenting has gotten the best of me. I can’t walk away anymore. I need a fix just to function. I struggled in school and told Dad I needed some cash to repeat a couple of classes. Instead, I bought more cocaine—more crack to keep me going to the end of exams.” Northern Escape
