A virtual writing retreat

START TODAY

In the Make a Splash Writer’s Retreat: Breaking the Surface, you will take a deep dive into your writing practice using metaphors, imagery, symbolism, and onomatopoeia, to name a few. You will move beyond an initial story or theme to create beautiful pieces of writing which will deepen your manuscript (existing or future) and make it more complex. We will take the time to explore what we can do with our writing—to take it from okay to OKAY!

A 5 Day Online Writing Retreat!

You can attend this virtual writing retreat: from the comfort of your own home, a coffee shop, or have a weekend away so you can focus on your writing without distraction.

DAY 01

Metaphors, Similes, and Imagery

The writing exercises that we will be doing in the Make a Splash Writer’s Retreat: Breaking the Surface will be in the form of various literary devices.

"Literary devices are ways of taking writing beyond its straightforward, literal meaning." writers.com

Writing beyond the most literal meaning is what deepens a story, what makes it more compelling.

LITERARY DEVICES: Metaphor, Simile & Imagery

DAY 02

Symbolism, Personification, and Hyperbole

The key to writing well is to choose a topic, story, or theme that you are interested in. If the subject matter is dull to you, writing will feel like work.

Consider what you might want to write about. Keep that idea at the forefront of your mind. Let it percolate there. Then use that idea in the Make a Splash Writer’s Retreat: Breaking the Surface where we will do a deep dive and see what treasures we can find.

On Day 02 we will take a look at symbolism, personification, and hyperbole.

DAY 03

Irony, Juxtaposition, and Paradox

It doesn’t always feel right to approach writing in a formal, structured way. It is more fun to just write and enjoy the experience.

However, there are ways to do some ad hoc, whimsical, creative writing—with a purpose. What I mean is that if we practice writing in a focused way—we write with a common theme or story in mind—then these exercises and the writing that comes from them will be connected, can be used together in a future story, and the time spent will not have been in vain.

On Day 03 we will take a look at irony, juxtaposition, and paradox.

DAY 04

Allusion, Ekphrasis, and Onomatopoeia

Writing your first draft of anything feels like a special secret; it is a private experience between you and your keyboard. Sharing these thoughts would be like letting the world into your brain. You may worry about opening yourself up to criticism. You may also wonder if people will be interested in what you say. Or, do you ask yourself this: what if I spend all this time on this and no one is interested?

Do not let self-limiting beliefs hold you back. Fears can prevent us from moving forward with our dreams. I would like you to consider sharing your gift with the world. What you have to say will be meaningful to someone.

On Day 04 we will take a look at allusion, ekphrasis, and onomatopoeia.

DAY 05

The What Now?

Each piece of writing completed over the first four days can be used to enhance your novel or create a foundation for your manuscript.

So, what now?

Have you ever contemplated what it would be like to be an author?

What would be better than spending hours upon hours creating worlds, storylines and characters that you and others will love?

If you would like to know what I have learned about writing and publishing a book, on Day 05, 5 Things You Need to Know About Self-Publishing will be of interest to you.

Still “thinking about it”?

You should give the online Make a Splash Writer’s Retreat: Breaking the Surface
