Hyphen, En-dash, Em-dash
Something I hadn’t understood initially was the correct use of hyphens and that there are other, longer versions of the hyphens that are used in different situations. Did you know that?? How did I not know that? Did I learn it in high school and not remember? That is a distinct possibility. My next question was what are these longer hyphens called? It turns out they are the en-dash and the em-dash.
Here are examples of each:
Hyphen: ice-cold or twenty-three
En-dash: 2016–2017
Em-dash: Would she know what to do when this week—not even a week—was over?
And finally, how do I access them in a Word document? Here is an excellent link showing how. https://youtu.be/ZfPxumi-FsU
