Hyphen, En-dash, Em-dash
Something I hadn’t understood until recently was the correct use of hyphens and that there are other, longer versions of the hyphen that are used in different situations. Did you know that?? How did I not know that? Did I learn it in high school and just not remember? That is a distinct possibility.
My next question was what are these longer hyphens called? It turns out they are the en-dash and the em-dash.
Here are examples of each:
- Hyphen: ice-cold or twenty-three
- En-dash: 2016–2017
- Em-dash: Would she know what to do when this week—not even a week—was over?
